Commitment to Sustainabilty

From leather sourcing, to product production and packaging, the Leather Cult is committed to a high level of sustainability in all operations and practices.

Leather Production

The Leather Cult sources all Italian vegetable tanned leather exclusively from member tanneries of 'Pelle Conciata al Vegetale in Toscana'. The Consortium has 19 member tanneries which adhere to strict regulations to preserve the tradition of vegetable tanning in the region, as well as a commitment to sustainable practices and ethical standards.

Below is their 'Sustainability Manifesto'. To visit the Consortium's website for additional information, click here.

Sustainably Operated

The Leather Cult operates on a made-to-measure business model, eliminating the issue of excess stock and so reducing waste. Leather scrap from larger pieces are used to create smaller pieces such as keychains and jewelry.

Overproduction is a key contributor to fashion waste: according to available data, between 10% and 40% of fashion apparel produced each year (billions of pieces) never get sold and end up in landfills. Even worse, luxury brands destroy unsold merchandise, by slashing or burning them, to ensure they cannot be used by those in need to protect the 'exclusive' image of their brands.

When products are removed from the Leather Cults collections, sample pieces produced for site photography and styling reels are sold in the shops sample sales. Nearly all of the sample pieces are sold and any unsold pieces are donated.

Environmentally Friendly Packaging

All pieces are meticulously packaged for an elevated unboxing experience. So much of todays fashion pieces are picked from bins and shipped to you in plastic bags, but purchases from the Leather Cult are made especially for you, and are packaged with as much thought and intention as they're produced.

After it's handcrafted, each piece receives a light coating of all natural leather balm, and is then wrapped carefully in tissue paper to keep it safe during its journey. The piece is then placed in its own gift box (which can be reused or recycled), tied with a grosgrain ribbon, and then wax sealed. Gift boxes are shipped in recyclable cardboard boxes.

Measurement kits are shipped in compostable padded envelopes.
